The Court of Appeal in Akure upheld the death sentence of businessman Ramon Adedoyin for the murder of OAU student Timothy Adegoke. The court affirmed the Osun State High Court's judgment but overturned orders for hotel forfeiture and educational compensation. Adegoke’s 2021 death remains a tragedy for the academic community.
The Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State, has upheld the death sentence of Ramon Adedoyin, a businessman and hotel owner, for his role in the murder of Timothy Adegoke, a master’s student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The ruling affirmed the Osun State High Court's earlier verdict, which found Adedoyin guilty. Adegoke’s body was discovered in November 2021 at Hilton Honours Hotel in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he had lodged.
While the appellate court dismissed Adedoyin’s appeal, it overturned specific orders from the lower court, including the forfeiture of Hilton Hotel and the directive for Adedoyin to fund Adegoke’s children’s education. The court noted these penalties fell outside its jurisdiction.
The case had drawn widespread attention due to its connection to a high-profile figure and the tragic circumstances of Adegoke’s death. The judgment has been hailed as a step toward justice, particularly for Adegoke’s family and the academic community mourning his loss.
