Former Minister Rauf Aregbesola and ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso held a strategic meeting in Lagos ahead of the 2027 elections. Former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso recently met in Lagos for discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, described as "strategic," comes amid growing political realignments in Nigeria as opposition figures explore potential alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Aregbesola, once a key APC figure, has seen his political trajectory shift after his faction, Omoluabi Progressives, severed ties with the party over alleged internal conflicts and marginalization. Shortly after, the APC in Osun expelled him for purported anti-party activities.
Kwankwaso, on the other hand, was the 2023 presidential candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and remains a significant political force. Though the NNPP has not officially confirmed coalition talks, party chairman Ajuji Ahmed recently stated that they are open to future negotiations.
This latest meeting follows a series of high-profile engagements among opposition figures. In recent months, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with Labour Party’s Peter Obi, while ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai and other political heavyweights have held discussions, signaling possible alliances.
With Nigeria’s 2027 elections still years away, the political landscape is already shifting, as key players weigh their options in the quest to challenge the APC’s dominance. The outcome of these strategic engagements could shape the country’s political future.
