The Labour Party (LP) has confirmed that Peter Obi will be its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. LP spokesman Abayomi Arabambi stated that President Tinubu would face strong opposition. He also dismissed Kenneth Okonkwo’s exit, insisting there is no leadership crisis within the party.
The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to fielding Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, declared President Bola Tinubu would face strong opposition in the upcoming polls.
Arabambi emphasized that Obi’s return as the LP candidate signals the party’s seriousness in challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He expressed confidence that the 2027 election would not be an easy ride for Tinubu.
Addressing internal party matters, Arabambi dismissed concerns over Kenneth Okonkwo’s resignation from LP, stating that his departure was a relief rather than a setback. He accused the actor-turned-politician of lacking loyalty to the party and working in favor of Tinubu and the APC.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. The claims of the party’s extinction are merely fabrications by detractors,” Arabambi asserted.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, previously ran for president in 2023 under the LP banner but finished third, behind Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the loss, LP remains determined to challenge Tinubu’s administration in 2027, banking on Obi’s popularity and growing support base.
With political tensions rising, Obi’s candidacy is expected to shape Nigeria’s political landscape leading up to the next election.
