Seyi Tinubu’s growing endorsements for the 2027 Lagos gubernatorial race have sparked political controversy. Groups like CONYL and FOST support his candidacy, while critics, including Joe Igbokwe, dismiss it as a distraction. Meanwhile, Lagos Speaker Obasa addresses rumors of his gubernatorial ambitions as APC downplays 2027 election discussions.
As the 2027 Lagos gubernatorial race approaches, endorsements for Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, have caused a stir in the political scene. On Tuesday, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) publicly endorsed Seyi as the ideal candidate for the role, praising his leadership skills and the influence of his father’s governance in Lagos. This endorsement, made after an extensive meeting in Owerri, sparked a wave of support, with groups such as the Middle Belt Youths and Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST) lending their voices to the cause.
However, the endorsements have been met with criticism, particularly on social media. Prominent APC member Joe Igbokwe dismissed the endorsements as a ploy to undermine President Tinubu, calling it a “distraction” aimed at weakening the ruling party. This criticism has only added fuel to the growing political debate.
Adding to the tension, Lagos State Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, addressed speculation surrounding his gubernatorial ambitions. Speaking after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the 2025 budget, Obasa denied claims of selfish aspirations, emphasizing that his focus was on strengthening the APC rather than vying for the governorship.
Amidst this political drama, the Lagos APC has distanced itself from the 2027 gubernatorial discussions, with its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, stressing the party’s commitment to governance and unity. Despite the ongoing speculation, the party insists that 2027 is not yet on the agenda, urging members to prioritize impactful leadership over political distractions.
