Forty-three individuals have been convicted and sentenced for internet fraud in Awka, Anambra State, and Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The convicts were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Directorate, after being apprehended for engaging in fraudulent activities online.

Investigations revealed that the individuals impersonated foreign nationals through various social media platforms, using fake identities to deceive and defraud unsuspecting victims. Upon their arraignment, each suspect pleaded guilty to charges ranging from impersonation to possession of fraudulent documents and obtaining by pretense.

Justice Evelyn Anyadike, presiding over the Federal High Court in Awka, sentenced them to eight months in prison, with the option of paying a ₦100,000 fine. However, a few convicts, including Nwankwo and Izuchukwu, were sentenced to two months of community service, supervised by the court registrar.

In addition, the court ruled that the electronic devices used in the fraudulent acts, such as mobile phones and laptops, be seized and auctioned. The proceeds will be transferred to the federal government’s account.
