Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted three students from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) on Friday, March 29, 2024.
The armed men raided Freedom Hostel, owned by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), around 7 p.m., seizing the victims and fleeing to an unknown location.
UNICAL Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Banku Obi, identified the abducted students as Ojang Precious Ebejin, a 200-level Medicine and Surgery student, Ugwu Chukwuemeka, a 300-level Genetics and Biotechnology student, and Damilola Dickson, a final-year student in the same department. SP Irene Ugbo, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement agencies were collaborating to rescue the students.
The abduction has heightened concerns about the security situation around educational institutions in the region, prompting calls for urgent action to safeguard students and prevent future incidents.
