Former Nigerian Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called on the federal government to take immediate steps to address the worsening economic hardship facing citizens. During a meeting with the Campaign for Democracy (CD), a civil society organization, in Minna, Niger State, Abubakar expressed concern over the growing difficulties people face in affording necessities.
Abubakar highlighted several pressing issues, including high transportation costs, rising fuel prices, expensive school fees, and the lack of financial relief for Nigerians. He urged all levels of government to take proactive measures to alleviate the economic challenges.
He stressed that the government’s current approach of offering palliatives is insufficient, advocating instead for the flooding of markets with affordable food supplies to help ease the burden on citizens. He said this would allow people to purchase essentials within their financial limits.
Abubakar also addressed the planned protests against economic hardship set for October 1, advising that while people have the right to demonstrate, they should do so peacefully. He further urged the government to be attentive to the protesters' concerns and respond accordingly to the people's grievances.
His remarks come amid growing nationwide discontent as inflation and economic challenges continue to impact everyday life in Nigeria.
