The Digest:
Fifteen lawmakers of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, including Speaker Bathiya Wesley and his deputy Buba Jijiwa, have resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) citing the "lingering crisis" at the national level. Wesley announced the defections during Wednesday's plenary, stating all letters contained the same message. The lawmakers have moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) but are yet to formally announce their decision. The defecting lawmakers are: Kefas Calvin, Bulus Geoffrey, Haruna Jilantikiri, Kefas Emmanuel, Ahmed Belel, Moses Zah, Kate Mamuno, Pwamwakeno Mackondo, Adun Alaba, Bulus Kantom, Musa Kallamu, Japhet Hammanjabu, and Abubakar Abdullahi (who resigned Tuesday). Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is also reportedly finalising plans to join the APC, having hosted party leaders to iftar at Government House on Saturday.
Key Points:
- Mass defection significantly weakens PDP's legislative presence in Adamawa.
- It signals likely gubernatorial defection to APC ahead of 2027.
- APC gains numerical strength, while PDP loses its majority.
- This reflects the ruling party's aggressive strategy to absorb opposition governors.
- The timing, with Fintiri's planned move, consolidates APC control.
