Ademola Lookman, Super Eagles winger, won the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award after a remarkable season with Atalanta and Nigeria. His performances, including a Europa League hat trick and AFCON silver medal, secured him the prestigious title at the CAF Awards ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Ademola Lookman, the talented Super Eagles winger, has been named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year. The announcement came during a star-studded ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco, where he outshone Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Ronwen Williams, and Serhou Guirassy to claim the prestigious award.
Lookman, 27, becomes the latest Nigerian to win the accolade, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who won in 2023. This marks the first time in 27 years that Nigerian players have won the award in consecutive years, a feat last achieved by Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba in 1996 and 1997.
The Atalanta forward had an exceptional 2023/24 season, scoring 17 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions. His hat trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen not only earned Atalanta their maiden European title but also underscored his pivotal role in the team’s success.
On the international stage, Lookman was instrumental during the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, scoring three goals and helping Nigeria secure a silver medal. His stellar performances earned him a spot in the tournament’s Best XI alongside Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong.
