Gernot Rohr, coach of Benin Republic's national team, admits it will be difficult to beat Nigeria's Super Eagles again in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Despite past success, he emphasizes the importance of organization and defense, as Benin aims for another upset after their World Cup qualifier win.
Gernot Rohr, the head coach of Benin Republic's national football team, admitted it would be tough for his squad to defeat the Super Eagles of Nigeria once more. In June, Benin had pulled off an impressive 2-1 win against the three-time African champions during a World Cup qualifier.
As both teams prepare for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Rohr emphasized that Nigeria is now at full strength. The Super Eagles will be without only one player, Ajayi, due to injury. Rohr acknowledged that Benin’s chances of replicating their earlier victory over Nigeria would be difficult, given the current state of the Super Eagles.
Rohr stated, “Nigeria wasn’t at full strength in June, but now they are. We are confident, though, that we can still play a strong game and get a favorable result.” He highlighted the importance of tactical organization, especially with the team's defense being restructured recently. The Cheetahs are focusing on improving their football and believe they can challenge the Super Eagles.
Despite the challenge, Rohr believes in his team’s ability to perform well and remain competitive against top African teams. He remains hopeful that Benin can still cause an upset in the upcoming match, stressing that previous victories prove that anything is possible when the team is well-prepared.
