Senate President Godswill Akpabio has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform initiatives, describing them as groundbreaking efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy. Speaking during the 2025 budget presentation at the National Assembly, Akpabio highlighted the transformative potential of the four proposed tax bills to enhance revenue generation and support small businesses.

The tax bills include the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, and the Nigeria Tax Bill, all of 2024. Akpabio criticized skeptics of these reforms, urging them to engage constructively with the proposals, which he called the most comprehensive tax reforms since independence.

He commended Tinubu’s administration for doubling government revenues to ₦18.32 trillion, reducing debt servicing from 97% to 68%, and fulfilling key foreign exchange obligations. Akpabio also praised achievements in infrastructure development, oil production, and the removal of fuel subsidies, emphasizing their long-term benefits.

Addressing the legislature’s role, Akpabio assured that the National Assembly would thoroughly examine and pass the budget while urging ministers and agency heads to cooperate during the budget defense process. He warned against delays or neglect of legislative oversight.
