The Nigerian Senate has reiterated its commitment to advancing the controversial Tax Reform Bills, dismissing rumors that any part of the legislative process had been suspended or withdrawn. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, addressing concerns raised during Thursday’s plenary, emphasized that the bills remain a priority for the chamber.
In his remarks, Akpabio strongly rejected media reports suggesting that deliberations on the bills had stalled. He reassured the public that the Senate would not be swayed by external pressure, adding, "The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform that benefits Nigerians will continue."
Akpabio also countered claims that the bills were withdrawn, explaining that such a decision could only come from the executive branch. He underlined the legislature's autonomy and clarified that no outside influence would alter the Senate’s agenda. "We don’t take orders from anyone, no matter how highly placed," he affirmed.
The Senate has moved forward with additional steps to address concerns surrounding the bills. This includes forming a special committee to engage with key stakeholders such as the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and representatives from various regions of Nigeria. Akpabio reassured Nigerians that adequate public consultations, including hearings with governors and business leaders, will be conducted to ensure transparency in the legislative process.
The Senate’s commitment to a thorough and transparent review aims to resolve uncertainties surrounding the tax reforms, with timeframes for consultations possibly extended if needed.
