The recent raid of clubs in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked controversy and condemnation from the Ondo State Lounge and Club Owners Association (OSLACOA).

Following the simultaneous raid on two clubs in Akure, which led to the arrest of 127 suspected internet fraudsters, reports of alleged assault and theft by EFCC officials surfaced on social media. Among the allegations were claims that the operatives destroyed CCTV devices in the clubs. In response, the EFCC denied any misconduct, stating that their operatives acted professionally during the operation. However, on Monday, protests erupted in Akure as youths demanded the unconditional release of those arrested.

At a press conference, Abayomi Ajipe, chairman of OSLACOA, expressed dismay over the incident, revealing that club owners initially mistook the EFCC operatives for armed robbers. Ajipe disclosed ongoing consultations with legal representatives regarding potential legal action. Ayo Abass Akinwande, speaking on behalf of Signatures Elixir, recounted the harrowing experience during the raid, alleging brutal treatment of customers and damage to property by EFCC operatives.

The incident has raised concerns about law enforcement practices and the impact on business operations in the community. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with stakeholders calling for accountability and justice.
