Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has announced a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state government employees, surpassing the federal minimum of ₦70,000. An implementation committee will develop the rollout plan, demonstrating the state’s commitment to improving worker welfare.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for state government employees to ₦80,000. This decision follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of a nationwide minimum wage increase from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers.

The announcement was made through a press release from the Commissioner for Information, Ini Ememobong. To facilitate a smooth transition to the new wage, Eno has established an implementation committee tasked with reporting back within one month on how to effectively roll out this increase. The committee is chaired by the Head of the Civil Service and includes members such as the Chairpersons of the State Civil Service and Local Government Service Commissions, along with various permanent secretaries from relevant ministries and representatives from labor unions.

This new minimum wage reflects the state government's commitment to improving the welfare of its workforce and ensuring fair compensation. While some states are in the process of adopting the ₦70,000 minimum wage, Akwa Ibom's decision to exceed this amount demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing the living standards of its workers.
