Orumba North LG in Anambra State renamed its secretariat after Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the late ex-chairman of NEC, to honor his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy. The ceremony was attended by local and state officials, community leaders, and the deceased's family.
The Orumba North Local Government Area in Anambra State has renamed its administration building to honor the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), now Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The move was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigeria's electoral reforms and his pivotal role in shaping the nation's democratic landscape.
During a special ceremony held at the local government headquarters in Ajalli, the Council Chairman, Captain Casmir Nwafor (retired), made the announcement. The event attracted dignitaries from various sectors, including government officials, community leaders, educators, youth groups, and well-wishers who gathered to pay tribute to Nwosu’s remarkable legacy.
In his address, Nwafor praised Prof. Nwosu's invaluable role in the 1993 June 12 elections, a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history. "His efforts in ensuring fair and transparent elections have set a standard for generations to come," said Nwafor. "This renaming is not just about honoring his memory but also reminding us all of his dedication to education and public service."
The ceremony also featured moving tributes from local and national leaders, with the Chief of Staff to Anambra’s Governor, Ernest Ezeajughi, highlighting Nwosu's impact not only on the local community but also on the broader political landscape.
In addition to the renaming, a memorial statue was unveiled, and prayers were offered in honor of Nwosu. His son, Nnaemka Nwosu, expressed gratitude for the community's support and urged the people of Ajalli to continue his father’s work through peaceful, service-oriented leadership.
This gesture comes as part of a broader movement to ensure that Prof. Nwosu’s contributions to the electoral process and his advocacy for democratic principles are preserved for future generations.
