Senator Ali Ndume has called on the Nigerian Senate to support the widow of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as his successor for the Anambra South Senatorial District. Ndume emphasized honoring Ubah’s legacy and cited precedents of widows succeeding their spouses in public office to continue their impactful contributions.
Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has urged his colleagues in the upper chamber to support the widow of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah as his successor for the Anambra South Senatorial District. He made this appeal during a valedictory session held in honor of the late senator.
Senator Ubah, who chaired the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream, passed away in July 2024 at the age of 52 after a brief illness. He had recently switched from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced his intention to run for the Anambra governorship election in 2025.
Senator Ndume emphasized the importance of continuing Ubah’s legacy, citing past instances where widows or family members succeeded deceased senators. He highlighted examples such as Margery Okadigbo and current First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who advanced politically through similar paths.
“It has been a tradition to honor the legacy of great senators by supporting their families,” Ndume stated. He described Ubah’s widow as capable and deserving, urging his colleagues to ensure she represents Anambra South to uphold her husband’s vision and contributions.
The process of electing senators in Nigeria, as stipulated by the Constitution, involves party nomination and victory in elections organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Ndume’s appeal aims to encourage a consensus among lawmakers to support the widow’s candidacy.
The session concluded with a commitment to preserve Senator Ubah’s legacy while celebrating his impactful contributions to the Senate and his constituency.
