Gunmen attacked the Umunze Police Station in Anambra State, killing two police officers. This incident, following a similar attack in Oba, raises concerns over increasing violence in the region. Local authorities are urging community cooperation in the investigation while vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Gunmen attacked the Umunze Police Station in Anambra State's Orumba South Local Government Area on Monday, resulting in the deaths of two police officers. This assault comes just two weeks after a similar attack on the Divisional Police Station in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers utilized improvised explosives and opened fire, causing a fire to break out at the police station. The two officers were killed while attempting to fend off the assault. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed that the bodies of the deceased officers were retrieved and sent for autopsy.
Ikenga noted that a joint security task force has been deployed to apprehend the attackers, with five unexploded explosives discovered at the scene. Following the attack, Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam conducted a site assessment to review security arrangements. He urged the public to assist law enforcement with any information regarding the attackers, promising confidentiality in return.
This incident marks a troubling escalation of violence in Anambra State. In response, House of Representatives member Princess Chinwe Nnabuife condemned the attack as senseless and extended her sympathies to the families of the slain officers. She emphasized that her office is collaborating with federal security agencies to address the security challenges in Umunze and Orumba, pledging efforts to bring the culprits to justice and restore safety in the community.
