The Anambra State Police confirmed that 22 people died in a tragic rice stampede that occurred on Saturday in Ihiala Local Government Area. Police Commissioner Nnaghe Obono Itam provided the death toll after visiting hospitals where victims were treated. He expressed condolences to the families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The police spokesman, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that an investigation into the incident was ongoing. He assured the public that the Anambra Police Command would continue to prioritize safety and crime prevention.
Governor Charles Soludo also extended his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, particularly to vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and children. He noted that the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, organized the event to provide relief materials to the less privileged in the community.
