NDLEA's successful operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria, alongside other recent arrests related to cocaine and cannabis smuggling.
An Angolan businessman, Mbala Dajou Abuba, was arrested at Kano's Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on February 25, 2025, for attempting to traffic cocaine. The 42-year-old, en route to Istanbul via Cairo, was apprehended after a body scan revealed he had ingested a large quantity of illicit drugs. Upon further observation, Abuba excreted 120 pellets of cocaine, weighing a total of 1.829 kilograms.
Abuba, originally from Angola's Zaire province, admitted to being involved in the drug trade after previously working in the township delivery services business. His arrest is part of a series of drug-related operations by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which also thwarted the attempts of two other individuals in separate cases.
In Lagos, NDLEA operatives intercepted an auto parts dealer, Okeke Ebuka Igwe, attempting to export 1.10 kilograms of cocaine hidden in vehicle parts on February 24. Another operation on February 23 resulted in the arrest of Ezechi Iyke Cyprian, who was attempting to transport 5.4 kilograms of cocaine to Owerri, Imo State. Additionally, NDLEA agents discovered 63.75 kilograms of cannabis at the Tincan seaport on February 28, concealed within a car shipment from Canada. The ongoing operations underscore the agency's intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking across Nigeria.
