Oluwatosin Onamade, an APC chairmanship aspirant in Ijede, Lagos, was murdered outside his home on Saturday night. According to his brother, Oluwafemi Onamade, the assailants, dressed in black, had been trailing him for some time before carrying out the attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers first fired shots at Onamade, but when the bullets failed to penetrate, they resorted to using machetes, striking his head and face. His brother strongly believes that the killing was politically motivated, as Onamade was gaining significant support in his bid for the local council leadership.
This is not the first attack on Onamade. In 2021, he survived an assassination attempt where one of his staff members was killed. During that incident, assailants vandalized his campaign materials and stormed his office, injuring his brother.
A close associate of the deceased, who requested anonymity, lamented that previous attempts on Onamade’s life had been ignored, allowing the attackers to eventually succeed. He urged authorities to ensure justice is served.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed awareness of the incident and stated that an investigation is underway. However, the APC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the killing.
Residents of Ijede remain on edge following the tragic event, calling for urgent security interventions to prevent further violence. The murder highlights the growing concerns over politically motivated attacks in Nigeria’s electoral process.
