APC chieftain Cletus Obun defends destabilizing the PDP as a legitimate political strategy, stating it’s part of party politics as long as it avoids violence. His comments follow allegations by PDP’s Segun Sowunmi, who blames internal crises on President Tinubu’s appointment of Nyesom Wike as FCT Minister.
Cletus Obun, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former chairman of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Cross River State, has stated that destabilizing opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is a valid political strategy. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obun emphasized that such tactics are acceptable as long as they do not incite violence.
Obun's remarks followed accusations by PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi, who attributed the party's internal crisis to President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Nyesom Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Sowunmi criticized Tinubu's decision, claiming it contributed to ongoing divisions within the PDP.
In response, Obun dismissed Sowunmi’s allegations, asserting that political destabilization is a common and permissible practice. "If the PDP claims we infiltrated and destabilized them, it’s a testament to our effectiveness. It's also their responsibility to counteract and destabilize us. As long as it doesn’t escalate into violence, it remains a legitimate political tool,” he stated.
The PDP has faced significant challenges recently, with internal disputes threatening its cohesion. Obun's comments further highlight the intense rivalry between Nigeria’s leading political parties as they vie for dominance in the nation’s political landscape.
