The APC has expelled former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola for alleged anti-party activities. His faction, the Omoluabi Caucus, had criticized the party's leadership. With speculations of him joining the opposition, Osun’s political landscape is set for a shake-up ahead of future elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled Rauf Aregbesola, former governor of Osun State, citing his involvement in anti-party activities. Aregbesola, who governed Osun for two terms, reportedly violated the party’s constitution by leading a faction, initially known as The Osun Progressives and later rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus.
The party’s leadership officially confirmed his expulsion on January 29, 2025, following a series of actions deemed detrimental to APC’s unity. Aregbesola’s faction had been vocal in criticizing the party’s internal structure and its leadership, particularly following the APC's loss in the 2022 governorship election in Osun to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The expulsion is the final development in a long-standing tension between Aregbesola and the state’s APC leadership. His faction, the Omoluabi Caucus, had also blamed the party for its declining influence in the state.
Political observers predict that Aregbesola may align with opposition parties or even form a new political movement ahead of the 2027 elections. The Osun PDP has reportedly expressed interest in courting Aregbesola’s supporters, viewing them as potential assets in upcoming political contests.
