The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its intent to proceed with the campaign launch for the upcoming Bayelsa governorship election on October 14, despite the disqualification of its candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva. The Federal High Court in Abuja disqualified Sylva on the grounds that allowing him to contest again would breach the 1999 Constitution due to his previous tenure as Bayelsa's governor.
In response, the APC reaffirmed Sylva as its governorship candidate, emphasizing that they have instructed their legal team to appeal the court's decision promptly and diligently. The party called on its members, supporters, and Bayelsa residents to remain patient while awaiting the outcome of the appeal, expressing confidence in a favorable resolution.
The APC's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of resorting to "mercenary lawsuits" and underhanded tactics to create confusion and distractions. Morka suggested that the PDP's actions were motivated by its poor performance and a lack of viable offerings to the Bayelsa electorate.
The disqualification and legal challenges have added a layer of uncertainty to the forthcoming election in Bayelsa.
