The Nigerian Court of Appeal has upheld Tajudeen Baruwa’s presidency of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), invalidating the election of MC Oluomo, a known ally of President Tinubu. The court reaffirmed Baruwa’s re-election, emphasizing adherence to due process and rejecting challenges by opposing factions within the union.
According to Sahara Reporters, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed Tajudeen Baruwa as the legitimate National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), nullifying the recent election of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo. The court upheld an earlier decision by the National Industrial Court, which validated Baruwa’s re-election during the union's May 2023 delegate conference. The appellate court dismissed the appeal filed against Baruwa, ruling it lacked merit and imposing a ₦100,000 cost on the appellants.
MC Oluomo, a loyalist of President Bola Tinubu, had previously been declared president after a controversial election held under the caretaker leadership of Isa Ore, which had been deemed invalid. This decision reinforces Baruwa’s leadership, invalidating all actions taken under the disputed caretaker committee.
The judgment marks a significant legal victory for Baruwa and his supporters, emphasizing adherence to due process in union elections. It also raises questions about the political dynamics within the NURTW, given MC Oluomo’s alleged ties to President Tinubu and his controversial track record.
