The Nigerian government has ordered an immediate suspension of Arik Air's aircraft operations, a move announced by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, on Tuesday. The minister's announcement did not provide reasons for the sudden suspension, leaving the airline and its stakeholders in confusion.
Roy Ilegbodu, CEO of Arik Air (currently in receivership), expressed frustration over the lack of prior warning or consultation before the directive was issued. He emphasized that this unexpected decision could severely disrupt the airline’s services, impacting passengers, employees, and the broader Nigerian economy. Ilegbodu highlighted that the grounding could leave many travelers stranded and increase travel costs.
Arik Air, taken over by the federal government in February 2017 due to substantial debt estimated at over N300 billion, has been under the management of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). Ilegbodu further criticized the grounding as an overreach of ongoing judicial processes, noting that a federal high court had instructed all parties to maintain the status quo in a related case.
Despite the challenges, Arik Air remains committed to adhering to legal processes and urges authorities to reconsider the decision. The airline aims to resolve the situation promptly to resume operations and continue serving its customers.
