The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the recently constituted governing councils for federal universities, criticizing the predominance of retired politicians over technocrats.

ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted concerns that the composition undermines university autonomy and development. Additionally, ASUU criticized the Federal Government for illegally constituting new councils while the previous ones, dissolved over 10 months ago, had not completed their tenures as mandated by the University Act.

The union insists on the recall of the old councils to maintain academic integrity and avoid politicizing university administration.
