The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian government, demanding the resolution of longstanding issues including unpaid salaries and the finalization of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. The union warns of potential industrial action if concerns remain unaddressed.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Federal Government, urging the resolution of persistent issues that have been unresolved since 2009. ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted the critical need to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, as outlined in the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement from 2021.

Additionally, the union is demanding the release of withheld salaries related to the 2022 strike and voiced increasing frustration regarding the government’s perceived lack of commitment and ongoing delays. ASUU cautioned that failure to address these concerns could lead to further turmoil within the public university system.

This ultimatum builds on a previous 21-day notice issued to the government, effective from September 23, 2024. ASUU emphasized that it should not be blamed for any disruptions that may occur if the government does not take proactive measures to resolve the impending crisis.

Among ASUU’s demands are the settlement of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), as well as the resolution of outstanding deductions for check-off dues and cooperative contributions. The union is also advocating for funding to revitalize public universities, the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and adherence to various recommendations related to university governance and administration reforms.
