Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that efforts to build a nationwide opposition coalition are well underway. Speaking to PDP leaders and opinion shapers, he confirmed cross-party discussions and pledged a soon-to-be-announced movement, Sabuwar Tafiya, aimed at reclaiming Nigeria’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has restated his commitment to building a broad political coalition aimed at challenging the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a meeting with delegations from Nasarawa State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a group of national opinion leaders, Atiku emphasized that the movement he is leading has already gained momentum.

Describing the effort as a “pan-Nigerian coalition,” Atiku said the initiative is attracting voices from across party lines and regional divides. According to him, the coalition, which he dubbed Sabuwar Tafiya (a “new pathway” in Hausa), is designed to unify Nigerians around the shared goal of reclaiming and rebuilding the country.

“We are working across the board — with people from PDP, APC, Labour, and beyond — because we believe it’s time to chart a new course,” Atiku said in remarks shared via social media.

He warned supporters not to be distracted by temporary gains or financial inducements, urging instead a focus on long-term national development. While official details remain under wraps, Atiku hinted that a formal announcement about the coalition's framework will come soon.

The comments come just a day after PDP governors publicly dismissed the possibility of any merger or coalition, suggesting friction or at least a lack of consensus within the party ranks. Still, Atiku maintains that inclusive political realignment is essential for Nigeria’s democratic health.

“This is not just about politics,” he said. “It’s about building a future that works for all Nigerians, not just the privileged few.”
