Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai has recognized the role of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar in shaping Nigeria’s economic policies during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late elder statesman Edwin Clark, el-Rufai highlighted Abubakar’s leadership in driving key economic reforms between 1999 and 2007.
El-Rufai, who once served as the head of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), noted that Abubakar played a significant role in spearheading privatization efforts and other economic policies under Obasanjo. He lamented that history often overlooks the former vice president’s contributions, saying, “Many of the things we achieved were under his leadership, but people tend to forget.” His comments come despite past political differences between the two, including accusations of corruption. However, his latest remarks suggest a nuanced perspective on Atiku’s economic legacy.
