Ethiopian Airlines Group is keenly awaiting approval from Nigeria's new administration to advance its partnership with Nigerian Air. As reported by The Reporter Ethiopia, the airline group had successfully secured a bid last year, agreeing to acquire a 49 per cent stake in Nigerian Air, the emerging flag carrier. The Nigerian government, private entities, and institutional investors retain the remaining stakes.
The initial plan was for Nigerian Air to kick off operations by October 3023. Despite encountering challenges from local operators, Ethiopian Airlines has made significant strides in preparing for the launch of the new airline. However, the recent leadership transition in Nigeria, with President Bola Tinubu succeeding Muhammadu Buhari, has introduced an unforeseen obstacle in the partnership's trajectory.
The new Nigerian administration has temporarily halted the project, necessitating a thorough review and approval process. "This is a customary practice when a country undergoes a change in government. Therefore, we are patiently awaiting the green light from the new administration to proceed," the airline group stated.
The Shareholders' Agreement remains unfinalised, and potential shareholders, including Ethiopian Airlines, must contribute capital to Nigeria Air. The airline group reiterated its enduring commitment as a pan-African carrier to enhance the African aviation industry. "We have been and will continue to partner with African governments and investors to establish national airlines in different countries," the airline affirmed.
Ethiopian Airlines Group's track record includes successful collaborations with ASKY in Togo, Air Congo, Malawian Airlines, and Zambian Airlines. These partnerships, encompassing capital investments and management contracts, underscore Ethiopian Airlines' dedication to building robust alliances within the African aviation landscape.
