Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has made history at the 2025 MOBO Awards, becoming the first woman in 16 years to win the Best African Music Act category. The prestigious event, held in Newcastle, also saw the rising star clinch the Best International Music Act award.
Ayra Starr triumphed over fellow Nigerian artists Asake and Tems, as well as South Africa’s Tyla, in the Best African Act category. For the Best International Music Act, she bested global icons such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, and Tems.
The ceremony, hosted by Indiyah Polack and Eddie Kadi, celebrated the best of Black music and culture. Following her victory, the official MOBO Awards social media page praised her achievements, calling her a "global star and unstoppable force."
In an emotional acceptance speech, Ayra Starr expressed her gratitude to her team, fans, and record label, MAVIN Records. "This is my first MOBO, and I’m shaking," she said. "Thank you to everyone who has supported me, my amazing MOB-Stars, my producers, my label, and my mother."
