Barcelona fired Xavi Hernandez as manager after 3 seasons and agreed to hire Hansi Flick from Germany to take over the Spanish giants.
Barcelona has fired head coach Xavi Hernandez after three turbulent seasons and reached a verbal agreement to hire former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Hansi Flick as his replacement.
The decision to sack Xavi comes just a month after the Spanish legend reversed his initial plan to resign at the end of the current campaign. He will still lead Barcelona in their final La Liga match against Sevilla on Sunday before departing.
"FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world," the club said in a statement. Xavi, 44, rejoined his beloved Barcelona as manager in 2021 after making 767 appearances and winning 25 trophies as a player. While delivering a La Liga title in 2023, his third season proved disappointing as Barcelona finished 12 points behind rivals Real Madrid.
The Champions League quarterfinal exit to Paris Saint-Germain appears to have been the final straw for Barcelona's hierarchy, leading them to Flick as Xavi's successor.
The 58-year-old German, who won a remarkable sextuple with Bayern in 2020, inherits a Barcelona side in need of rejuvenation and expected to undertake a major summer overhaul of the squad. "This is an incredible opportunity to lead one of the truly great clubs in the game," Flick told reporters. "I look forward to getting to work in Barcelona and writing some new history with this storied team."
