Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri reveals he was once urged to perform traditional sacrifices to become governor. He rejected the offer, remaining steadfast in his faith. His victory followed a Supreme Court ruling in 2020, disqualifying his opponent, David Lyon, due to fraudulent credentials.
Douye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa, revealed that he was once advised by a senior citizen to perform certain traditional sacrifices to secure his position as governor. Speaking at a thanksgiving event in the Sampou community, Diri shared how, in 2020, the elder invited him to Abuja and suggested performing sacrifices. Diri, however, rejected the proposal, stating that his faith in God would not allow him to do so.
The senior citizen, who had invested $10,000 to bring marabouts from Senegal for the rituals, was reportedly shocked when the Supreme Court ruled in Diri's favor, affirming his victory. Diri recounted how the man later asked for a refund, which Diri provided. Despite the man's initial anger, the Supreme Court's judgment in Diri’s favor left him astonished.
Diri’s victory came after the Supreme Court disqualified David Lyon, the APC candidate, due to issues with his deputy’s credentials, overturning the results of the 2019 Bayelsa governorship election. Diri, who was the runner-up in the election, was declared the rightful winner by the court, taking office as governor. The story was witnessed by Diri’s deputy and a friend who had accompanied him during the visit to the senior citizen.
