The Nigerian military has intensified its crackdown on banditry in Zamfara State, eliminating two top commanders linked to the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, confirmed the operation while addressing military officers in Abuja on Friday.
According to General Musa, the successful strike led to the deaths of Kachalla Gwammade and Kachalla Shehu, both high-ranking members of Turji’s camp. The operation, carried out on Thursday night, has reportedly forced Turji into a desperate search for an escape route as troops continue to advance into key hideouts.
Military forces launched follow-up offensives in Tufan and Mashima villages, further displacing armed groups and restricting their movements. Additionally, security forces revisited Turji’s former base, demolishing any remaining strongholds to prevent a resurgence of criminal activities.
The CDS emphasized that sustained military pressure has significantly weakened the operational capacity of these armed groups. Intelligence reports suggest that both Bello Turji and another wanted bandit, Sani Black, are now attempting to flee the region as the security forces tighten their grip.
Reaffirming the military’s commitment, General Musa stated that the campaign against terrorism and banditry would continue until all insurgent factions are completely dismantled. He declared that the era of impunity was over, sending a strong warning to other criminal elements operating within Nigeria.
