A security guard was killed late Friday night by suspected herdsmen near Otobi Dam in Otukpo, Benue State. The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in the area. Residents demand urgent intervention from the government and security forces to prevent further bloodshed and protect communities.
Tension is once again high in Benue State after a security guard was reportedly killed late Friday night by suspected herdsmen near the Otobi Dam in Otukpo Local Government Area. The tragic incident adds to the wave of violent attacks that have plagued communities within the Otukpo axis in recent weeks.
Confirming the incident, Angbo Kennedy, the lawmaker representing Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, called for urgent action. "This is becoming too much," he said. "A guard was killed this evening at Otobi Dam by herdsmen. We must watch out for each other and may be forced to resort to self-help if nothing is done."
At the time of reporting, authorities had not released the name of the slain guard, and no suspects had been apprehended. The attack at Otobi Dam follows a pattern of escalating violence, with previous deadly assaults recorded in nearby settlements like Okpomaju, Okete, and Asa earlier this year.
Residents and community leaders are appealing to the Benue State Government and security agencies to bolster security measures, particularly around key infrastructure such as the Otobi Dam, which has become increasingly vulnerable.
The Friday night attack comes barely a day after gunmen hijacked a Benue Links bus, killing two passengers and kidnapping thirteen others, further deepening fears of insecurity across the region.
