Betty Akeredolu, widow of the late Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has expressed regret over her husband’s reliance on spiritual practices rather than medical treatment during his battle with prostate cancer. In a recent interview, she stated that her husband might still be alive if he had chosen medical intervention over religious approaches.
Akeredolu, who passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67, reportedly sought prayers, anointed items, and spiritual rituals instead of conventional medical treatment. His wife, a breast cancer survivor, emphasized her scientific understanding of cancer and dismissed the notion of spiritual causes or healing.
She highlighted their contrasting views on religion, stating that while her late husband was deeply religious, she was more pragmatic and science-driven. Despite their differences, she noted that they shared a happy marriage. Betty Akeredolu criticized the reliance on spiritual objects such as “blessed handkerchiefs” and “anointed water,” questioning their effectiveness in treating serious illnesses.
According to her, medical science provides the best chance of survival for cancer patients, and adherence to evidence-based treatment is crucial. She lamented that her husband’s decision to prioritize religious beliefs over medical advice ultimately led to his untimely death.
