Binance CEO Richard Teng expressed relief over the release of Tigran Gambaryan, the firm's head of financial crime compliance, from Kuje prison in Nigeria. Gambaryan had been detained for nearly eight months amid allegations of money laundering, which the EFCC recently dropped due to international diplomatic reasons.
Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, expressed profound relief at the recent release of Tigran Gambaryan, the company's head of financial crime compliance, from Kuje prison in Nigeria. Gambaryan had been detained since February after being implicated in a money laundering case involving Binance, which was initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in April.
The EFCC announced in court on Wednesday that it would drop the charges against Gambaryan, citing significant international and diplomatic considerations. Following this development, Teng took to social media to commend Gambaryan's strength during his nearly eight-month ordeal. "We are deeply relieved and grateful that Tigran Gambaryan has finally been released after enduring nearly eight months of detention in Nigeria," he stated.
Teng highlighted the importance of Gambaryan's health and well-being, emphasizing that the team was thankful he could now focus on recovery alongside his family. In a separate statement, Gambaryan's wife, Yuki, expressed immense gratitude to the U.S. government for its role in securing his release.
She described the past eight months as a "living nightmare" for their family, noting her relief at finally being reunited. Yuki also thanked the supporters who provided hope during the challenging period, stating, "Our children cannot wait to see their dad again." Gambaryan reportedly left Kuje prison late Wednesday night.
