The Lagos State Police Command recently apprehended a man accused of stealing an Uber car under unusual circumstances involving a plate of pepper soup. According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the command, the incident occurred when an Uber driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, picked up a passenger named Isaiah from NNPC Filling Station, Maryland. Isaiah allegedly lured the driver to a hotel in Oshodi, where he treated him to a meal of pepper soup and an energy drink.
During the meal, Isaiah purportedly requested a cotton bud to clean his ear. Seizing the opportunity, he obtained the car key from the driver under the guise of needing it for a moment. Subsequently, Isaiah absconded with the Toyota Corolla while it was parked at the hotel. Fortunately, police officers conducting a routine stop and search operation on Boladale Street intercepted the stolen vehicle. Isaiah failed to provide satisfactory proof of ownership, leading to his immediate arrest. Upon the arrival of the driver at the scene, confirming the theft, Isaiah was taken into custody for further investigation.
Reactions to the incident on social media were varied, with many expressing incredulity and humor at the bizarre method of car theft involving pepper soup. Some users humorously likened the situation to biblical tales or lamented the desperation that drives such crimes in the face of economic hardship.
The Lagos State Police Command continues to investigate the matter to ensure justice is served.
