Bode George criticizes presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga for allegedly disrespecting former President Olusegun Obasanjo following his critique of Nigeria's leadership. George emphasizes Yoruba cultural values of respecting elders and warns Onanuga of potential repercussions for his actions. The clash highlights tensions within Nigeria's political landscape and calls for civil discourse.
Bode George, a prominent PDP chieftain, has denounced presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga for allegedly disrespecting former President Olusegun Obasanjo. George expressed displeasure at Onanuga’s response to Obasanjo’s critique of Nigeria’s current leadership, describing it as culturally inappropriate.
Speaking at Yale University on November 16, Obasanjo criticized Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, calling them a "travesty" and citing issues like corruption, insecurity, and underdevelopment. He also called for credible reforms in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore public confidence. Obasanjo’s use of "Emilokan," a phrase associated with President Bola Tinubu’s campaign, highlighted his concerns about the nation’s leadership trajectory.
Onanuga countered these remarks by accusing Obasanjo of contributing to Nigeria’s problems, referencing the contentious 2007 elections and alleged economic mismanagement during Obasanjo's tenure. Onanuga further argued that Obasanjo’s administration had left unresolved issues that persist today.
George, speaking on Nigeria Info FM, defended Obasanjo, noting that his status as an elder demands respect. He criticized Onanuga’s tone and remarked, “In Yoruba culture, elders are treated with dignity, even in disagreement.” George warned that Onanuga’s behavior might have lasting consequences and emphasized the importance of respectful discourse. “There’s always a day after,” George said, implying that actions often lead to accountability.
