UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was tragically shot and killed outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. The gunman, who targeted Thompson specifically, escaped on a Citi Bike. The motive remains unknown, and authorities are offering a reward for information.
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed early Wednesday morning in what police describe as a "targeted" attack outside a hotel in New York City. The shooting occurred around 6:46 a.m. near the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, just minutes before a UnitedHealth Group investors’ conference was set to begin.
Thompson, 50, was struck multiple times in the back and leg by a masked gunman, who approached him while he was walking to the hotel. Witnesses reported that the shooter, who appeared calm and deliberate, ignored other pedestrians before opening fire. After shooting Thompson, the gunman briefly experienced a malfunction with his firearm, but quickly cleared it and continued to shoot. Despite efforts to revive Thompson through CPR, he was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward at 7:12 a.m.
The suspect, described as a white male wearing a black jacket and face mask, fled the scene on an electric Citi Bike, which was captured in surveillance footage. Authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his identification and arrest. Police believe the attack was deliberate, although the motive remains unclear.
Thompson leaves behind his wife, Paulette, and two children. It has been reported that the family had received threats before the attack. The NYPD is continuing its investigation and appealing to the public for assistance in solving the case.
