Speed Darlington, the Nigerian rapper, is facing legal action for defamation after mocking Burna Boy on social media. Arrested in November 2024, Darlington’s legal team argues his continued detention is unlawful. His case is before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Defamation charges stem from a diss track and public criticisms.

Speed Darlington, a Nigerian rapper, is facing charges of defamation after making public criticisms of Burna Boy on social media. His arrest on November 27, 2024, during a performance in Owerri, Imo State, marked the second time in two months that he has been detained. His legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, accused Burna Boy of being behind the arrest, which was linked to Darlington's online posts mocking Burna Boy’s association with American rapper Diddy.

In a statement from Darlington’s lawyer, Stanley Alieke, it was confirmed that the rapper is now formally charged. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Darlington’s defense emphasizes that he should have been granted bail, as defamation is no longer a criminal offense under Nigerian law. According to the law, such disputes should be resolved through civil litigation, not police intervention.

Alieke also expressed frustration over the prolonged detention, noting that the rapper is legally entitled to bail and that defamation cases should not require police involvement. The court proceedings are set to continue after the holiday season.
