Calvin Bassey, Fulham star and Super Eagles defender has revealed that watching Lionel Messi’s iconic goal against Nigeria during the 2018 FIFA World Cup inspired him to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Bassey had the option to play for England. However, the decisive moment came during Nigeria’s group match against Argentina in the 2018 tournament. Despite Nigeria losing the match 2-1, Messi’s spectacular opening goal made a lasting impression on Bassey.
In the match, Messi showcased his exceptional skill, controlling a long ball with his knee before deftly maneuvering past a defender and striking a powerful shot past Nigerian goalkeeper Francis Uzoho. Bassey watched in admiration, stating that the moment deepened his love for Nigeria and solidified his desire to don the national colors.
Reflecting on that game, Bassey told Sky Sports, “Messi, of course – Messi is Messi. That was the motivation for me to play for Nigeria.” He made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2022 and has since earned 28 caps. Earlier this year, he contributed significantly to the team’s journey to the AFCON final, where they secured a silver medal.
