Adrienne Munju, a Canadian woman, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Lagos federal high court for importing 35.2 kg of synthetic cannabis. Convicted after pleading guilty, she claimed she was recruited online for the job to fund her master’s degree in Canada.

A federal high court in Lagos has sentenced Adrienne Munju, a Canadian national, to 11 years in prison for drug trafficking. The conviction stems from her guilty plea to two charges related to the importation of 35.2 kilograms of synthetic cannabis known as "Canadian loud."

Munju was apprehended on October 3 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport during routine checks of incoming passengers on a KLM flight. Narcotics agents discovered 74 parcels of the illicit substance concealed in her luggage. During her testimony, Munju revealed that she had been recruited through an online platform for CAD 10,000 to smuggle the drugs into Nigeria, hoping to finance her master's degree.

In court, after Munju admitted guilt, the prosecution presented evidence including her Canadian passport, confessional statements, and laboratory analysis reports of the seized drugs. The presiding judge, Deinde Dipeolu, sentenced her to six years for the first charge and five years for the second, totaling 11 years. However, he also offered her the option to pay a fine of N50 million for each charge, summing up to N100 million.
