The Digest:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that candidates are not required to remove their hijabs during registration, following a viral video alleging discrimination against a Muslim candidate at Afe Babalola University (ABUAD). In a statement, JAMB explained that the requirement for ears to be visible during biometric photo capture is a "standard global practice" for passports and visas, which does not necessitate hijab removal. The board stated the candidate was asked to sign an undertaking "to formally state in writing that she personally chose not to comply with the guideline regarding ear visibility, so that the record would accurately reflect the circumstances." JAMB emphasised: "Candidates are not required to remove their hijab. The simple requirement is that the ears be visible during photo capture, which can be done without removing the hijab itself." The board urged the public to avoid spreading misleading accounts.

Key Points:
  • JAMB's clarification reassures Muslim candidates of their religious rights.
  • It distinguishes between biometric requirements and religious discrimination.
  • Muslim candidates gain confidence, while the board maintains technical standards.
  • This signals the importance of clear communication to prevent misinformation.
  • The timing, during UTME registration, provides immediate guidance.
JAMB clarifies hijab is not required to be removed during registration, explaining ear visibility for biometric capture is standard practice, not discrimination.
