Cardinal John Onaiyekan criticizes Nigerian politicians for selectively choosing churches and preachers who avoid challenging their corrupt behavior. He calls for churches to promote godliness, warning that a religion that fails to do so is worse than none at all. His comments were made during a Channels TV interview.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, has criticized Nigerian politicians for being selective about the churches they attend and the pastors they listen to. According to Onaiyekan, politicians, driven by greed, avoid churches and preachers who challenge their corrupt behavior. He explained that many politicians choose churches where they are unlikely to be confronted with uncomfortable truths, instead seeking environments that endorse their actions.
Onaiyekan emphasized that while churches in Nigeria may be growing in size, there is a concerning lack of godliness in the way some politicians engage with religion. He pointed out that religion should lead to godliness, and when it doesn’t, it becomes worse than no religion at all.
The Cardinal's remarks were made during an interview on Channels Television's Inside Sources program, where he called for churches to promote genuine righteousness rather than focusing solely on their growth and success. Onaiyekan’s comments reflect his concern over the lack of moral leadership in both religious and political spheres in Nigeria.
