Thousands of Lagos commuters struggle with severe congestion on Oshodi’s alternative pedestrian bridge after the government closed the main one due to safety concerns. With growing fears of stampedes and crime, residents call for urgent repairs.

The alternative pedestrian bridge in Oshodi, Lagos, was overwhelmed with commuters on Monday following the continued closure of the main bridge connecting Oshodi Bus Terminals 2 and 3. The Lagos State Government had shut the bridge in January over safety concerns, warning residents against crossing the expressway at unauthorized points.

With enforcement measures in place, thousands of commuters had no choice but to use the alternative bridge, resulting in severe congestion. Many Lagosians expressed fears over safety risks, including stampedes and increased pickpocketing.

Videos circulating on social media showed large crowds struggling to navigate the bridge, with users calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to expedite repairs. One commuter lamented, “The closed bridge has been shaking for months, but now the only alternative is at breaking point. This is an urgent crisis!”

Twitter reactions highlighted frustrations over the state government’s inaction. A user, @kellyaigbedion, stated, “This bridge has been closed for over a month, and now look at the chaos. The authorities must fix it before something tragic happens.” Others humorously pointed out the surge in petty crimes

Despite growing concerns, the Lagos State Government has yet to issue a response. Commuters continue to demand immediate intervention to prevent a potential disaster.
