A commercial bus driver in Lagos violently resisted arrest by setting a LASTMA officer ablaze during a traffic violation stop. The officer sustained severe burns and was rushed to the hospital. LASTMA condemned the attack and vowed to take strong action against such violence.
A disturbing incident unfolded in Lagos when a commercial bus driver reportedly set ablaze a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer while resisting arrest. The confrontation began when the driver of a Volkswagen T4 was stopped for breaching traffic regulations in the Cele area, near Mile 2.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA's director of public affairs, the driver and his conductor aggressively resisted arrest, culminating in an assault on the officer. During this violent altercation, the driver allegedly poured petrol on the officer and ignited it. The severely injured officer was immediately transported to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
Taofiq condemned this act of aggression, noting the significant risks faced by LASTMA officials as they carry out their duties. He called for all drivers, whether commercial or private, to adhere to traffic laws and treat LASTMA personnel with respect.
LASTMA has declared that it will not tolerate any violence against its staff and will pursue strict consequences for those responsible for such attacks. This incident highlights the pressing challenges that traffic enforcement officers encounter in their daily efforts to ensure safety on the roads of Lagos.
