More than 20 soldiers sustained severe injuries after a speeding vehicle rammed into them during an early morning exercise near Myoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos, on Friday. The troops were engaged in their routine drill when the car, reportedly carrying three passengers, veered off course and struck them.
Witnesses believe the driver may have been under the influence, as the vehicle was moving at an alarmingly high speed before the crash. The impact led to a state of panic, with fellow soldiers rushing to aid their injured colleagues. One of the individuals inside the vehicle managed to flee the scene, while the other two were captured and allegedly subjected to physical retaliation by enraged military personnel.
A wrecked Toyota sedan was later spotted within the barracks as soldiers gathered in small groups, discussing the shocking turn of events. Emergency responders immediately transported the wounded to the military hospital inside the barracks, where they received urgent medical attention. Several injured personnel were seen limping outside the hospital, while others remained under close supervision.
Military authorities have yet to confirm whether there were any fatalities. Senior officers at the barracks declined to make an official statement, directing all inquiries to higher command. Repeated attempts to reach army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu for a response were unsuccessful.
