Chilean ex-President and prominent billionaire businessman, Sebastián Piñera, met a tragic end at the age of 74 when the helicopter he was traveling in plunged into a lake in southern Chile on Tuesday, February 6.
Piñera, who served two non-consecutive terms as Chile's president from 2010 to 2022, was aboard the helicopter with three others. Sadly, the former president was pronounced dead upon the arrival of rescue personnel at the scene, while the other three passengers survived.
Although officials have not confirmed Piñera as the pilot, two sources told Reuters that he was indeed at the controls. The intended destination of the ill-fated helicopter remains unconfirmed.
President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning, expressing the nation's grief over the loss. Preparations are underway for a state funeral scheduled for Friday to honor Piñera's political legacy.
Interior Minister Carolina Toha confirmed the recovery of Piñera's body from the lake, near the town of Lago Ranco, and praised his dedication to public service. Toha has been actively involved in leading efforts to combat recent deadly wildfires.
Leftist President Gabriel Boric paid a heartfelt tribute, recalling Piñera's call for unity during his second presidential term. "We are all Chile, and we should dream it, draw it, and build it together," Boric stated, extending condolences to Piñera's family during these difficult times.
International leaders also expressed their condolences. Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who described himself as "surprised and saddened," highlighted the positive relationship between their countries during Piñera's presidency. Argentina's former President Mauricio Macri and Colombia's former President Iván Duque echoed sentiments of immense sadness and an irreplaceable loss.
In Chile, Piñera was celebrated as a successful businessman whose first term saw rapid economic growth. His global recognition extended to overseeing the remarkable rescue of 33 miners trapped in the Atacama desert in 2010, an event that captivated the world and inspired the movie "The 33" in 2014.
As Chile grapples with the loss of a charismatic leader, the nation reflects on Piñera's multifaceted legacy, remembering him for his contributions to both business and public service.
