A banner at Lekki Central Mosque declaring "Jesus is not God" has sparked outrage among Christians in Nigeria, who find it offensive to their faith. The incident, alongside past controversies, has reignited debates on religious tolerance and mutual respect in Nigeria

The Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos has sparked outrage with a banner proclaiming, “Jesus is not God. Jesus is a prophet, a messenger of God.” The message has drawn sharp criticism from Christians, who view it as disrespectful and offensive to their beliefs. Many argue that Muslims would not tolerate a similar statement about Prophet Muhammad.

The controversy has ignited heated debates on social media, with Christians calling for the immediate removal of the banner. They perceive it as an attack on their faith, citing past instances where similar statements were made by the mosque during Christian holidays, such as Christmas in 2020. At the time, another banner stated, “No deity is worthy of worship except Allah, all prophets including Jesus Christ worship him,” which was seen as an attempt to undermine the significance of the holiday.

Some Muslims, however, defend the message, asserting that it aligns with Islamic teachings. They emphasize that Islam recognizes Jesus as a prophet and not as divine, a view they believe should not provoke hostility. They argue that the statement is a reaffirmation of their faith rather than an insult to Christianity.
